Electro-waste plan to come into effect

The producer responsibility scheme on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) will be fully implemented in phases this year. This scheme aims to promote recycling and proper disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment generated in Hong Kong. Provisions concerning suppliers of air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, computers, printers, scanners and monitors, collectively referred to as regulated electrical equipment (REE), will be implemented on 1 August 2018. Suppliers of such regulated electrical equipment are required to register and pay a recycling levy for REE distributed in Hong Kong, while sellers of REE are required to arrange free removal service for consumers on the old equipment they dispose of. The Government and the relevant trades have been working closely to get prepared for the scheme's implementation. More information about this initiative can be read from the Hong Kong Waste Reduction Website.
