Facilities and Resources

PolyU Design offers fully equipped modelling workshops that provide students with both conceptual and physical spaces to explore and experiment with materials (including wood, plastic, metal, and fine metal), tools (such as photography), processes, and ideas. Hands-on practice is considered an essential part of the problem-solving process, enabling students to develop practical techniques through active workshop engagement. These facilities give students valuable opportunities to build skills and gain mastery in the art of making. 

Digital Print Shop (8/F)

The Print Shop provides students with professional-grade printing and binding services. Equipped with high-quality colour laser printers, a large-format plotter for architectural drawings, and two large-format inkjet plotters for banners and posters, the shop supports a wide range of printing needs. Binding options include perfect binding, saddle stitch, and wire-o binding, with hole-punchers and paper cutters available to ensure a professional finish. Facilities available: Large-format poster printing, book printing and binding, colour/B&W copying, and paper cutting.

 

Material Resource Centre (5/F)

The Material Resource Centre (MRC) in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design is a place to explore materials representing current trends in design, materials research and productions from all over the world. Visitors can discover new interesting materials and related technologies that can lead to new sources of inspiration and creativity.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:30 (excluding Saturdays and public holidays)

Fab Lab (1/F)

PolyU Design Fab Lab operates with the vision to develop a vibrant and sustainable community of makers with focus on exploring new possibilities of personal and digital fabrication for design. It is situated on the 1/F of Jockey Club Innovation Tower, with a range of digital fabrication facilities for students from different backgrounds and interests to learn, explore, prototype and share. 

 

Production Workshop (1/F)

The Wood Workshop is fully equipped with essential machinery, including a band saw, drill press, disc and belt sanders, lathe, and a CNC router specifically designed for wood fabrication.

Adjacent to this facility, the Metal Workshop provides comprehensive capabilities for metalworking processes such as cutting, bending, spot welding, and hole punching. The workshop also features a CNC milling centre for precision machining of metal and foam, supporting advanced 3D prototyping. In addition, a laser cutting machine is available for fine and intricate die-cut applications.

 

3D Printing Workshop (1/F)

Equipped with various models of 3D printer, 3D Printing Workshop at 1/F can be used to create all kinds of 3D products. 

 

Photography Studio (G/F)

Our Photography Studio features two main venues: the Shooting Studio (V010) and the B/W Darkroom (V010d). We offer technical advice and support for all types of still photography, including both film and digital formats, Our studio is equipped with a wide range of professional gear for capturing, processing, and creatively manipulating photographic images.

The Shooting Studio is available for booking and provides access to various lighting equipment, backgrounds, and special effects to enhance your photo sessions. Meanwhile, the Darkroom and its associated facilities are dedicated to developing black-and-white films and enlarging black-and-white prints, supporting your creative process from start to finish.

 

Media Production Studio (G/F)

Media Production Studio (V020) provides a space with professional studio lighting system for video production. The studio has black and white cyclorama, as well as a green wall setup for shooting chroma key and various kinds of shoot. A motion capture system is also installed in the studio.

To use these facilities, students or staff members are advised to submit their booking via the online room booking system in advance.

Students are also welcome to borrow equipment at the storeroom by booking.
