Using Turnitin Feedback Studio for Online Grading and Feedback: QuickStart Guide
This short guide provides you with essential ideas and references about Turnitin Feedback Studio and how to use it for online grading and providing feedback to your students.
What is Turnitin Feedback Studio?

Turnitin Feedback Studio is an online paperless grading tool that saves instructors’ time while offering easy-to-read meaningful feedback on students’ writing. It includes features to streamline the grading process, making commenting more specific. Student work can also be compared against a database of websites and previous paper submissions from within the course and other courses, as well as other schools and universities. This introduction video presents the basic functions of Feedback Studio.

Who can use it?

Feedback Studio is available to all current PolyU faculty and the students enrolled in their Blackboard courses.

How to create a Turnitin assignment?

You can follow this step-by-step “Instructor Guide” to create and edit a Turnitin assignment. You can also refer your students to this “Student Guide” to guide them on submitting and reviewing their work.

Please also be reminded that Feedback Studio provides a combined interface of previous “Turnitin Originality report” and “GradeMark”. Users can switch from Feedback Studio to GradeMark classic view by following the quick reference below:

What are the essential features of Feedback Studio?
The Similarity Report

After comparing a student paper’s text to a database comprising millions of pages of digital content, archived student papers, and professional, academic and commercial journals and publications, the similarity report provides a similarity index as well as a detailed report of any matching found. Teachers can take this report as a reference to determine whether any plagiarism happens in the student work. You may find “Reading the Originality Report in Turnitin” is useful for you to interpret the report. Also refer to “Instructor Guide” for more help on interpreting the report.

QuickMarks

QuickMarks in Feedback Studio allows instructors to drag and drop comments directly onto a student’s paper and can be combined with a voice memo or rubric criteria to provide robust feedback quickly. Using the QuickMark Manager is a good way to make your QuickMarks organized.

Customized rubrics

A rubric is a set of predefined criteria and scales through which students' work can be evaluated. Feedback Studio supports three types of rubrics:

  • Standard rubric - allows you to enter scale values and criteria percentages. The maximum value for the standard rubric will be the same as the highest scale value entered.
  • Qualitative rubric - allows you to create a rubric that has no numeric scoring.
  • Custom rubric - allows you to enter any value directly into the rubric cells. The maximum value for the custom rubric will be the sum of the highest value entered in each of the criteria rows.

You can create a rubric using the built-in template or download and adapt some sample rubrics to fit your needs.

What are the other tools available in Feedback Studio?

You can add comments and links in a bubble comment and type notes for students anywhere on the paper submitted to Feedback Studio. You can also leave a voice or a text comment in the feedback summary as overall feedback on your students’ work.
