: Learner-Centred Approach in Textile Design

A comprehensive learning package for textile design

Description

The learning package comprises a multi-media DVD-ROM, a web-based user guide and a web-based textile design gallery, as follows:

Intended educational value

The major contribution of this project is the development of an interesting and interactive teaching and learning process. The combination of a comprehensive learning package, a creative design-based project and a quality circle team will result in increased learner motivation and self-confidence, and this in turn will lead to enhanced subject understanding and a move from a “teacher- and textbook-centred” to a "learner- and self-motivation centred" paradigm.

Evaluation/Comments

The Project Leader and team members made a significant contribution to this project, and several assistants and student helpers were hired to help with video-taping, scripting, final editing, website design and the production of the web-based user guide.

Overeall, this project has been satisfactory.

A questionnaire survey and focus group interviews produced positive results, including some useful student feedback for improving the teaching method, for example:

"The PowerPoint file in WebCT provides detailed information on the tie-dye and screen print process, but the video shown there is not very clear." Zenia Chan, April 2007.

"We can review other students’ designs in the design gallery which motivated me to do my best for my design. I don’t want to get a low rating!” Breveda Lo, May 2007.

"Although uploading the file of my design is a little bit complicated, I enjoyed the result when other people comment on my work!” Cathy Chan, May 2007.

"The web-based user guide is clear and simple to follow” Fiona Chan, March 2008.
