Computerized vocabulary testing system
Description
This testing system, which is available on the English Language Centre’s (ELC) Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (MOODLE) web platform, allows PolyU students to self-test their vocabulary. The system applies Cobb's Vocabprofiler to determine the size of students' activated productive academic knowledge.
Intended educational value
The project data have the potential to inform various aspects of the work of the English Language Centre (ELC) and Department of English (ENGL). These include:
- developing an English Language Enhancement Programme (ELEP) module(s) for developing students' productive academic vocabulary;
- running short courses, workshops and electives on academic vocabulary, focusing in particular on the development of students' productive vocabulary;
- supplementing ELC textbooks and other learning materials;
- making more materials on productive academic vocabulary available in the Centre for Independent Language Learning (CILL); and
- informing ENGL curricular development.
