An Investigation into the Academic Vocabulary Knowledge of PolyU Students

Objectives:
- To provide empirical data and researched conclusions on:
- the size of PolyU students' academic vocabulary;
- the difference between students' receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge, and the size of the activated academic vocabulary that they integrate into their writing; and
- the differences in academic vocabulary knowledge between students from Chinese-medium schools and English-medium schools, and between higher diploma students and degree students
- To develop a computerized vocabulary testing system on the English Language Centre's (ELC) MOODLE web platform, to allow students to self-test their vocabulary.
- To provide directions for the development of English language learning and teaching materials to be used across the University.
