Criteria of judgment for use in band description of Shumian Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (Written Chinese Proficiency Test, SHSK)

Description

Criteria covering 6 areas:

  1. vocabulary control (11 criteria)
  2. grammatical control (11 criteria)
  3. cohesion and coherence (6 criteria)
  4. thematic development (6 criteria)
  5. sociolinguistic appropriateness, (6 criteria)
  6. task fulfillment and relevance (6 criteria)

Intended educational value

The ultimate goal of the reformation is to attain a formal recognition for the SHSK by going through an international/national academic validation, such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Remarks

The CEFR suggests six levels of performance description running from "basic user" to "independent user", to "proficiency user". In view of the fact that SHSK is a measure of writing ability of advance L1 level (university level/ expected level for university graduates), we identify that the realm of SHSK is at a higher level of the Common Reference Levels of CEFR, excluding those belonging to "Basic User".
