Objectives:
This study intends to reform the construction of the Shumian Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi Test (Written Chinese Proficiency Test, SHSK) for Graduating Students’ Language Proficiency Assessment (Chinese strand), CBS, PolyU to be in line with:
- the linguistic patterns and contemporary modes of communication in professional communities in Hong Kong;
- the sociolinguistic demands of the rapid growth of China; and
- the new trends in language testing, with particular reference to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Language Assessment.
The ultimate goal is to attain a formal recognition for the SHSK by going through an international/national academic validation.
Remarks:
- The test was incorporated as one of the component tests of GSLPA Chinese for all UGC-funded graduating students of PolyU's Bachelor's degrees in semester 1 of 2008-2009. It was found to be statistically valid.
- The SHSK is of the higher levels of the Common Reference Levels of CEFR.
