: Applied Profession-related Integrated Learning (APRIL)

Centre for Applied Learning Website and Online Resources

Description

This is one of the major outcomes of the project whic illustrates the achievement of most of the project objectives, especially in providing support to the three major parties involved in applied workplace education: university academics, clinical educators and students (http://www.polyu.edu.hk/appliedlearning/).

Intended educational value

The Centre for Applied Learning provides an integrative model of applied health and social care education and the tripartite relationship among the different parties. The major issues identified in this tripartite relationship include roles and responsibilities, strategy and management, outcomes and assessment, and innovative teaching, learning and assessment activities in support of a desirable and facilitative context for applied health and social care education. The model provides integration between academic and workplace learning and offers an online resource for students, academics and fieldwork educators which has been added to and revised regularly to keep its content up-to-date. As well as increasing the information about applied learning, the addition of an online forum has given users an opportunity to interact with Project Team members and other users. The e-newsletters update users on activities within the project, and so increase awareness and interactivity. The three online learning modules - "Making a learning plan", "Infection control" and "Ethics in the workplace: Sexual harassment" - are available for students to use pre-clinical to prepare them for their placements, thus enhancing their educational function.

Example of application

These online resources may be used in preparing students for WIE or clinical placement, e.g. in terms of their roles and responsibilities.

Evaluation/ Comments

The learning module section of the website has been used by individual Project Team members with their students, so they [e.g. Dr. Kit Sinclair (OT)] can add details about this.
