TDG project

: Outcome-based learning and evaluation on land surveying professional practice

Assessment of student performance with industry participation

Description

This is an assessment exercise in which members of professional bodies sit in the final presentations and interviews for students in the Surveying stream of the BSc(Hons) Geomatics programme. The students are given materials with sample answers (declared not to be the only answers) to help them prepare the individual case studies to be assessed. These materials provide detailed land surveying professional training and, after an introductory lecture, the students can use them for self-study.

Intended educational value

The case studies and industry participation in assessment will enhance the teaching/learning and assessment process and offer the students an opportunity to face various contemporary challenges in the land surveying industry.

Example of application

The industry, the professional institute (Land Survey Division of Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors) and the government (Survey and Mapping Office of Lands Department - SMO) have continued to support this assessment exercise. It is planned to continue to use the project materials in our BSc programme.
