Learning to Improve: Using Evidence to Guide Educational Improvement at PolyU

The workshop will begin with an examination of evidence currently available to inform the improvement of learning and teaching at PolyU. We will then engage in group exercises and discussion of how to put this information to use in the service of educational improvement.

Director, National Survey of Student Engagement
Indiana University Bloomington

Alexander C. McCormick is an associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Indiana University Bloomington. He also directs the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Since its launch in 2000, more than 1,600 bachelor’s-granting colleges and universities in the US and Canada have used NSSE to assess the extent to which undergraduates engage in effective educational practices. Through this work, McCormick aims to enrich the discourse about quality in higher education, while enabling institutions to diagnose and improve undergraduate teaching and learning. License adaptations of NSSE now operate in several countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. His research interests center around assessment, accountability, and evidence-informed improvement. McCormick holds a Ph.D. in education and sociology from Stanford University.

Drawing on his experience with NSSE, McCormick will deliver a lecture and workshop focused on the role of evidence in documenting strengths and weaknesses in the quality of educational experiences, interrogating assumptions and beliefs, designing improvement efforts, and assessing the results of those efforts. He will also discuss organizational conditions that support and undermine the constructive use of evidence in service of improvement.
