Project Overview

The "JC IG Play Space @ JMC" (Jat Min Chuen) project will see JCDISI work closely with HKHS, as the housing provider, estate manager and elderly services provider, local residents and local NGOs to understand the stakeholders’ asapirations for JMC.  Together with our design consultant MLKK, JCDISI will organise a series of engagement activities from March 2023 onwards to encourage kai fongs to share their aspirations for JMC to develop a blueprint for transforming public areas in housing estates to support intergenerational play and interactions.

The resultant design scheme would encapsulate local stakeholders’ aspirations for intergenerational play through the participatory co-design processes and accentuate the spatial character of the area to support placemaking and community building.

About JMC

Developed in 1981, JMC is an estate with over 40 years of age, which has always been a pioneer in housing development. It is among one of the first estates to be developed in Shatin, and is the first public rental housing estate to be equipped with a swimming pool.

The opening of Chung Yuet Lau, a new elderly housing complex constructed through MiC (Modular Integrated Construction), in 2023 marks another milestone in the history of JMC. It also creates an invaluable opportunity to explore the intergenerational play space concept to add value to HKHS’ “Caring Engaging Smart” initiative to promote intergenerational co-living, build social capital in the community and empower older adults to age in place.

Over 40% of the population in Jat Min Chuen is 65+ as of April 2020. While there is a relatively high concentration of seniors living in JMC, the demographics is still relatively young. About 25% of the elderly population is 75+, making JMC an ideal estate to test how the intergenerational play space concept could help to future-proof estates in Hong Kong to support ageing in place. Adopting the intergenerational play space design concept in revamping the public realm will also help inject vibrancy in the estate and encourage our ageing residents to adopt a smart, healthy and active lifestyle.
