Easy to learn Cantonese

Understanding Cantonese

Cantonese is a dialect which is popular in Guangdong and Guangxi. It is called “Gwongdong speech” in Hong Kong. Cantonese is the common language in Hong Kong society. It is used in different contexts, including political, financial, cultural and educational scenes.

Understanding Initials

In Cantonese, the 20 initials can be classified according to place of articulation. They are: labial b, m, p, f; apical d, t, n, l; laminal/palatal z, c, s / j; velar g, k, ng / h; labialised- velar gw, kw / w and zero initial – no initials.

Understanding Finals

There are 53 finals in Cantonese：7 monophthongs (aa、e、i、o、u、oe、yu), 10 diphthongs (single vowel + -i/-u ), 17 finals ending in nasal consonant (single vowel + -m/ -n/ -ng), 17 finals with unreleased stops (single vowel + -p/-t / -k) and 2 syllabic nasals (m, ng).

Understanding Tones

In Cantonese, the six tones are indicated by Arabic numerals 1 to 6 placed after each syllable.
