Surveying Student’s FruitfulWIE Internship in South Africa

 Thanks to Ng Wing Sze for capturing gorgeous moments of her eye-opening WIE internship! As a year-three Surveying student, Wing Sze had her fruitful internship in the world-famous QS consultancy firm, ‘RLB Pentad Quantity Surveyors Limited’ in South Africa this summer. Work-Integrated Education (WIE) has played an indispensable role in the curriculum of full-time degree programmes in ourDepartment since its launch in 2006. It enables our students to get a taste of applying the knowledge they learnt in classes to the workplace in the construction industry. We believe that WIE can also inspire our students to pursue excellence in their academic development and future professions. BRE PhD Graduate, Guo Shan Receiving ‘Outstanding Young Scholar Award’ & Starting a New Chapter at Renmin University of China

 We are so excited to learn that Dr. GUO Shan, our PhD Graduate, got the Outstanding Young Scholar Award and a job of an assistant professor at the Department of Land Management, the Faculty of Public Management and Administration of the Renmin University of China(RUC). Funded by the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, with Prof. Geoffrey Shen’s supervision, Dr. Guo completed her Ph Din our Department this year.Her research focuses on China’s sustainable land use and modeling the water-land nexus. Embarking on a new journey is always exciting and challenging. We wish Dr. Guo every success in her new journey!

BRE PhD Student, Maxwell receiving Award at West Africa Built Environment Research Conference

Let’s give a big clap to Mr. Antwi-Afari Maxwell Fordjour, our PhD student who received the Gibrine Adam Promising Young Scholar Award at the West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER) Conference2017. Started in 2009, the West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER) Conference offers researchers the opportunity for exchange of knowledge and interaction on current research and issues in the built environment area.In summer 2017, the 7thWABER Conference was held at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, featuring an array of interactive workshops and sessions on research related topics and issues of interest. The Gibrine Adam Promising Young Scholar Award recognized Maxwell, a young researcher who demonstrated promise and potential to become a research leader.It was a great reward for Maxwell’s impressive presentation on the paper‘Effects of Quadriceps Muscle Fatigue on Balance Control and Fall Injuries following Repetitive Squat Lifting Task in Construction Workers’ at the Conference.

BRE PhD Student, Waleed Receiving Award at International Postgraduate Research Conference

 Please join us in congratulating Mr. Waleed Umer, our PhD student on winning ‘The Dean’s Award for Best Presentation’ at the 13th International Postgraduate Research Conference on 15 September 2017. Waleed was highly praised for his presentation skill and research on ‘Biomechanical Testing of Ergonomic Interventions for Rebar Tying’.   Organized by the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford, the International Postgraduate Research Conference aims at providing researchers with an ideal platform of gaining diverse perspectives on cutting-edge international research in the built environment.

Sun Yi serving the Expert Group on The Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific

Dr Sun Yi, our Assistant Professor, is very honored to serve in the expert group on the Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific which was commissioned by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The mission of the expert group is to review and discuss the latest version of the draft Disaster-related Statistics Framework (DRSF). The expert group’s advice is intended for use by officials from the Governments to develop the quality of national statistics on disasters.   Hosted by the ESCAP East and the North-East Asia Office, the 5thmeeting of the expert group was held in Incheon, South Korea in September 2017.As a member of the expert group, Dr Sun was invited to deliver the presentation on ‘Place-and Age-Responsive Disaster Risk Reduction for Hong Kong’ under the first session ‘Addressing Disaster Risks in East and North-East Asia –Leaving no one behind’ in this meeting.In addition, the members of the expert group included delegates from member states and associate members of UN, as well as UN bodies. It is expected to deliver its recommendations and outcomes of its work (in the form of its final draft of the DRSF) to the ESCAP Commission in May 2018.   Please Click HERE for more about Dr Sun Yi:
