BRE Award for Outstanding Teacher (2012/13)

 Congratulations to Mr. Stephen Mau on being selected for the Departmental Award for Outstanding Teacher (2012/13)! Mr. Mau's major teaching areas are extensive from arbitration, dispute resolution, mediation, contract, tort to property. In terms of research efforts, international trade, commercial arbitration and construction arbitration are great interest of him. Well-done!

 Bravo! Our Surveying Student,Miss Yuki Li Tsz Wing received the “Outstanding Student Award, Faculty of Construction and Environment’ for the academic year 2012/13. What a wonderful moment to Yuki! She got the Award from our President, Prof. Timothy W. Tong and received guests' appreciative applause as well as warmest congratulations at the Outstanding Student Awards Presentation Ceremony on 17 February 2014. Yuki’ Sharing Yuki shares with us, ‘It is my greatest honour to receive the award of The Outstanding Student of Faculty of Construction and Environment. This is a significant recognition of my hard work over the past four years and motivates me to strive for even more excellence and improvement in the future.’ In addition, she thanks to all her supporters, ‘My study at PolyU is full of ups and downs but fortunately my family and friends always give me their unceasing support, so that I can succeed in achieving what I have set out to do. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to my family, especially my mother who always stands by me, and my friends and my classmates in the BTMS programme for their kindness and care. “Focus Group Study on Long Term Housing Strategy” on the list of “Outstanding Professional Services Awards 2013”

 “Long-term housing strategy” has become one of the hottest subjects in the society.The research team comprising three departments, Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS), Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) and Public Policy Research Institute (PPRI),conducted a focus group study on this topic in 2013. Their great endeavor got‘the Multi-departmental Project Award with the Highest Contract Value” in the Outstanding Professional Services Awards 2013. For the team, Prof. Francis Wong(BRE)received the award from Prof. Alex Wai, Vice President (Research)of PolyU and the appreciative applause from guests at the Presentation Ceremony on 14 February 2014.His remarkable leadership was important to this success. Prof. Albert Chan, Interim Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment(FCE),gave the team his warmest congratulations at the Presentation Ceremony.His words of encouragement and this achievement gave the team every confidence to take on new challenges in the future. Congratulations to all participating team members!

CIB News Article: Winner Sebestyen Future Leaders Award

Winner CIB Sebestyén Future Leaders Award 2013 Title: Investigating the green building development in China Winner of the 2013 CIB Sebestyén Award   The CIB Student Chapter Committee has declared the proposal by the HKPolyU Student Chapter the winner of the 2013 CIB Sebestyén Future Leaders Award. The proposed project is supported and will be executed in collaboration with CIB Working Commission W116 - Smart and Sustainable Built Environment. Research Background To promote the development of green building in China, the national construction ministry issued a standard called “Evaluation Standard for Green Building” (ESGB) in 2006. This evaluation standard includes six major indicators, namely: land saving and outdoor environment, energy saving and energy utilization, water saving and water resource utilization, material saving and material resource utilization, indoor environmental quality, and operation and management. A green building label (GBL) will be issued to the building that satisfies the basic number of items in ESGB. The annual number of GBL projects increased significantly, from 10 in 2008 to 241 in 2011. Academics in China also paid grant effort to improve the situation of green building. At present, it is a general consensus amongst government, public and academics that the conception of green building should be promoted further. Research Objectives The four research objectives are: to review and understand the development progress of green buildings in China to evaluate the similarities and differences of China’s green building evaluation standards in other countries to investigate the obstacles which may hinder the development of green building in China to explore the success experiences of projects that obtained green building labels. Research Methodology To achieve the research objectives, appropriate methodologies will be utilized, including: Content analysis Face-to-face interview Semi-structured questionnaire survey Case studies. BRE Student Winning the OSHC Best Dissertation/Project Awards 2013 (Undergraduate Category)

 The dissertation report of a 2013 graduate from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE), Ms WONG Wai Ming (黄惠明), was adjudicated as the one of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Best Project Award 2013 winners under the category of Undergraduate Degree Programme organized by the statutory Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC). The Award aimed at encouraging post-secondary students in Hong Kong to appreciate the importance of occupational safety and health in their studies. The OSHC offers a maximum of ten awards annually, based on the relevance, quality and originality of the submissions. The graduate received an award certificate and a cash prize of HK$3,000 during the OSH Best Project Award Prize Presentation Ceremony 2014 launched on 18 February 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The winning dissertation report of Ms Wong, being a full-time graduate of BSc(Hons) in Surveying programme in 2013, was entitled “Evaluating the Effectiveness of Safety Partnering Programme (SPP) in Improving Construction Site Safety in Hong Kong”. The winner was supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan (陳煒明博士), Associate Professor of the BRE Department.
