Congratulations to Karen LAM Ching - Winner of Fung Scholarship 2015/16

 Congratulations to Karen Lam Ching, our Surveying student on winning ‘Fung Scholarship2015/16’! This scholarship will mean a lot to Karen for her exchange programme to the Queensland University of Technology in Australia in early next year. Karen’s all-round achievements in a range of areas from the personal skills, academic performance, extra-curricular activities to community services enabled her to stand out from other applicants for this Fund Scholarship.The upcoming exchange programme will utterly bring her an eye-opening experience and further enhance her learning when she is back to our campus. Professor Eddie Hui Awarded 'Medal of Honour'

 We are very excited that Prof. Eddie Hui has been recently awarded ‘Medal of Honour’ in recognition of his enduringly dedicated contributions to the region, particularly the Town Planning Board and the surveying sector. Prof. Hui has been serving a range of public organizations in Hong Kong, from Town Planning Board, Metro/Rural and New Town Planning Committee, Hong Kong Housing Society,Urban Renewal Authority, Real Estate Services Training Board (up to 2015)to Advisory Panel Member of Planning Department on HSK NDA and so on. Prof.Hui is very grateful for this remarkable achievement and to a number of parties for their great appreciation and warmest congratulations. Congratulations to Ir Ken Chan! HKIE Young Engineer of the Year Award 2015

 Ir Ken T. K. Chan, one of Prof. Albert Chan’s PhD students, was conferred as this year’s Young Engineerby the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers(HKIE). We take this chance to send Ken our heart felt congratulations on his receiving this very prestigious award. Ken is currently a PhD student in our Department where under the supervision of Prof.Albert Chan, he is carrying out the research on the implementation of partnering in project management. More about Ir Ken T.K. Chan: Ir Chan began his engineering career as a graduate trainee at CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd (CLP) in 2003, where he was exposed to various aspects of the electricity supply business, including transmission substation design, procurement, public affairs and distribution network construction. As an Engineer I in CLP, Ir Chan leads a team of engineers to implement distribution network projects in Lantau, Peng Chau and Cheung Chau, providing a reliable and timely electricity supply to major infrastructure and residential developments in these areas. Ir Chan advocates innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration for solving engineering challenges. One example is the development of an innovative, cost-effective and energy-efficient earth mat construction method that combines civil and electrical engineering processes. This innovative method won him the Certificate of Merit of the HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members (Category II) in 2009. Over the last decade, Ir Chan has assumed an active role in promoting engineering to the younger generation and the general public. He has been a speaker and mentor in the “CLP Young Power Programme” since 2005. He has also organised for the Association of Hong Kong Professionals a Professional Internship Programme for secondary school students since 2013 to help young people plan their careers. He also participated in the RTHK Community Broadcast Programme, promoting the engineering profession and highlighting the contribution of engineers to society. Ir Chan is committed to serving the HKIE and the community. He was a Committee Member of the HKIE Young Members Committee for six consecutive years, from 2005-2010, and has also delivered school talks and public talks to promote the image of engineers. He is keen to encourage young professionals to get involved in community affairs and social issues for the betterment of Hong Kong. Towards that end, he has initiated various discussions between policymakers and young professionals. The discussion forum on sustainable infrastructure development, which was held in 2014 and attended by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR and more than 200 professionals of various disciplines, is an excellent example of Ir Chan’s initiatives.

BRE Student Winning CIOB(HK) Outstanding Student Awards (2014-15)

 In the Outstanding Student Awards (2014-15) organized by the Chartered Institute of Building (Hong Kong), one alumni of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of PolyU was rewarded for his final year dissertation announced on 30 July 2015. Under the bachelor degree category, Mr Ho Man Lai, Alfred (何文禮) was the prize winner from PolyU with his empirical study of identifying and analyzing the critical success factors for implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Hong Kong. He was a full-time surveying degree graduate in June 2015 with Upper Second Class Honours whose dissertation was supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan, Associate Professor of BRE. Alfred has been working for Gammon Construction Ltd as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor (AQS) since July 2015. The primary goals of these awards are to promote excellence in project management in construction and to recognize students with outstanding academic achievements. The awards were based on the quality of student’s own work for final year project/dissertation completed in the academic year 2014-15, the contents of which should be focused on the pertinent aspects of construction project management. The winner received an award certificate and a prize cheque of HK$4,000 at the CIOB(HK) Annual Dinner 2015 held on Friday, 11 September 2015 at the New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon.

Ranked 2nd in the ‘Built Environment and Design’ by the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) 2014-15

 We are very excited that PolyU is ranked the 2nd in the subject ‘Built Environment and Design’ by the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) for the year '2014 to 2015'. This is our second consecutive year for reaching this high rank. We shall keep our best endeavours to take on new challenges ahead! In 2009, University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory was established at Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University. URAP aims at developing a ranking system for the world universities based on academic performances in terms of their scholarly publications’ quality and quantity. Since 2010, the annual World Ranking of 2000 Higher Education Institutions has been released.

BRE Student Winning CIOB(HK) Outstanding Student Awards (2013-14)

Under the bachelor degree category, Mr SZE Chung Yuen, Keith was the prize winner from PolyU with his empirical study of identifying and analyzing the key success criteria and the critical success factors for public sector design-and-build construction projects in Hong Kong. He was a full-time surveying degree graduate in June 2014 with First Class Honours and an overall GPA of 3.82 out of 4. He was supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan, Associate Professor of BRE. The primary goals of these awards are to promote excellence in project management in construction and to recognize students with outstanding academic achievements. The awards were based on the quality of student’s own work for final year project/dissertation completed in the academic year 2013-14, the contents of which should be focused on the pertinent aspects of construction project management. The winner received an award certificate and a prize cheque of HK$4,000 at the CIOB(HK) Annual Dinner 2014 held on Friday, 12 September 2014 at the New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon.

 The Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM) Project Management Achievement Awards (HKIPM Awards) is held each year in Hong Kong, and the awards are aimed to provide an opportunity for organisations and project managers in different disciplines showing their project success amongst their counterparts. The seminar covered the planning ideas, design concepts, green features, construction challenges, maintenance issues, interactions with different key stakeholders at various stages, success story behind each project, as well as the future development trend of public housing projects in Hong Kong. The seminar was very informative, clearly presented and thought-provoking. It was well received by about 200 registered attendees, and ended with some interesting questions from the audience and insightful answers from the guest speakers. BRE Students Got Prize in the 5th National BIM Competition

 The 5thNational BIM Competition 2014, organized by China Association of Construction Education and co-organized by Tsinghua Sware Software Hi-Tech Co. Ltd,was held on 17-18 May 2014in Nanchang University and Shenyang Jianzhu University. 256 teams from 212 universities in China joined in this final competition. Four BRE undergraduate students from the team “PolyU BRE Bravo”participated in this event(Nanchang University), and won the Third Prize in All-around competition. This is a good opportunity for our students to know more about BIM and its application in China.
