The BRE Mentorship Scheme was launched in 1999, well ahead of any other similar schemes at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It is available to full-time BRE undergraduate students.
We have over 140 active mentors who are professional Building Surveyors, General Practice Surveyors, Maintenance Surveyors, Quantity Surveyors, Building Contractors, Construction Engineers, Facility Managers, Project Managers, Property Managers, etc. Mentors are very enthusiastic and dedicated to bringing up their mentees.
To show appreciation, we invite our mentors to the annual BRE Reception. It also provides an opportunity for mentors to meet with each other and colleagues in the Department.
The Purpose of the BRE Mentorship Scheme
The Mentorship Scheme is designed to enhance mentees’ holistic education experience and support their personal, academic, and professional development. Through the BRE Mentorship Scheme, young individuals have the opportunity to connect with professional practitioners and experienced seniors in the industry. It is not the intention for the mentor to assist the mentees in completing their assignments or coursework.
This programme primarily establishes a professional connection between mentors and mentees on a voluntary basis. Its aim is to help mentees prepare for potential challenges in the professional environment and learn from the mentors' professional and practical experiences.
The Mentors
The mentors are industry practitioners with years of work experience who are willing to share their extensive professional expertise and life experiences with students.
Mentors will help nurture the development of the young generation who will be joining the industry in the near future. The mentors' sharing of valuable experiences and perspectives helps broaden mentees' learning and prepares them to face future professional challenges. For mentors, it is a good platform to gain insights into the thoughts and perspectives of the next generation through this connection.
The Mentees
The mentees who participate in this scheme are expected to be proactive in initiating contact with their mentors and be responsive to their mentors' feedback, guidance, advice, and any requests for meetings or updates. Mentees are expected to:
- explore personal, academic and professional development areas, as well as untapped potentials,
- make invaluable connections and expand their professional network,
- stay updated on the latest professional practices in the industry, as well as workplace culture and etiquette.
Operational Mechanism
The BRE Mentorship Scheme is completely voluntary and free of charge. BRE will help connect appropriate mentors with students based on the specialism of mentors and disciplines preferred by mentees. It is up to the mentors and mentees to start the communication after the matching.
The connections can be through phone discussions, social media platforms such as WhatsApp, WeChat, and Facebook, occasional face-to-face meetings, email exchanges, etc.
