Issue 13, November 2015

Welcome to the e-bulletin of Communities of Practice (CoPs), where you will be able to catch up with our most updated events and information of the five CoPs in PolyU.

Promotion of CoP to New PolyU Teaching Staff

Dr Stephen Chan (facilitator of Service Learning CoP) and Ms. Grace Lim (co-facilitator of Enhancing Students' English Abilities CoP) introduced CoP to the "Certificate in Introduction to University Teaching" students in October. This mandatory programme, conducted by Educational Development Centre, is specifically designed for full-time PolyU staff who are new to teaching. These new teachers are eager to understand more about our university initiatives, to get support from other fellow colleagues who have similar interests, and to make professional developments.

If you would like to join CoP and obtain peer support, please write to us via ask.cop@polyu.edu.hk.

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: What can philosophy teach us about teaching (and research)?

On 28 October, three distinguished panelists, Dr Henry C. B. Chan (COMP), Dr Jack K. C. Chun (GEC) and Prof. Haibin Yang (Department of Marketing, CityU), were invited to share their interesting interpretations of the relationship between teaching and philosophy. This roundtable session facilitated discussions and reflections that gave participants powerful insights on improving their teaching and professional development.

English Across the Curriculum: Writing Effective Assignment Questions, Assessing Language in Student Presentations and Improving Students' English Use in Assignments

This workshop, organised by the UGC-funded inter-institution project Professional Development in Enhancing English Across the Curriculum, and supported by the CoP on Enhancing Students’ English Abilities with speakers from CUHK, CityU and PolyU, was designed for academic staff members on how to (i) write more effective exam/essay questions and titles; (ii) assess language performance in oral presentations; and (iii) encourage students to pay attention to English use in their assignments. Participants were introduced to practical suggestions, established methods, and concrete resources.

PowerPoint slides can be downloaded from the CoP website.

The Ever Changing Landscape of Distance Education: From Online to Mobile to MOOCs

This seminar, held on 2 November, was jointly organised by Department of Computing, CoP on Using Blackboard LMS to Enhance Learning and Teaching and EDC. At the seminar, Professor Wang Minjuan from San Diego State University shared her view of the evolution of learning, from classroom to e-initiatives, to online and hybrid, to mobile, and then to the recently emerged cloud learning and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). She focused on the trends and issues related to online learning, including the mixed course delivery models, the use of learning management systems (such as Blackboard, Moodle and Sakai), student engagement, assessment, learning analytics, and cultural diversity. Prof. Wang particularly discussed the impact of mobile learning and the controversial MOOCs to higher education.

The video and the PowerPoint slides of the seminar are available on the CoP website.

Speaker's Bio:

Wang Minjuan is Professor of Learning, Design, and Technology at San Diego State University (SDSU), a program manager for California State University (Chancellor’s Office), and distinguished professor of Shanghai International Studies University. Her research specialties focus on online learning, mobile learning, cloud learning, and intelligent classrooms. As a winner of several research awards, Prof. Wang is recognized as one of the high impact authors in blended and mobile learning.

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Enhancing Learning in an Increasingly Multicultural Classroom

Date: 24 Nov 2015 (Tue)
Time: 12:45 - 2:00pm
Venue: Teaching and Learning Lab 3, Room G017, G/F, Pao Yue-kong Library
Facilitators:

Gail Forey (ENGL), Cathy Hsu (SHTM), Anthony Lok (MM)

One of the hallmarks of a world-class university is the presence of international students from all around the world. To capitalize on this opportunity, how are we tapping into this geography of thought to help take our teaching and learning to the next level? Come and join us and engage with three distinguished educators in how they take advantage of our increasingly multicultural classrooms, and in the process, open our students to a world of learning unlike their own.

Please join us in a Roundtable discussion and hear how three engaged PolyU colleagues are using these pedagogical innovations.

This activity is co-organized by Community of Practice (CoP) on Developing, Recognising and Rewarding Excellent Teaching, EDC and Centre STARS.

How do Students Learn while Serving the Community through Engineering Projects?

Date: 11 Nov (Wed)
Time: 12:30-2:00pm
Venue: M1603 (Senate Room), 16/F, Lee Ka Shing Tower
Facilitators:

Prof. Kam-Tim Woo, the recipient of the 2015 UGC Teaching Award and the Associate Professor of Engineering Education of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

You are invited to a sharing session by Prof Kam-Tim Woo, a recipient of the 2015 University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award. Prof Woo is the associate professor of Engineering Education of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and is the founding Director of the Centre for Global & Community Engagement. He established a major programme for experiential learning through robotics team competitions.

Since 2007, students have gained 131 prizes and awards for their work under his supervision. He also leads students and colleagues developing advanced applications to the needy in the community which equipped the students with a wide range of critical and career-relevant skills.

Please register in advance as seating is limited.

(light lunch will be ready at 12:15pm outside the Senate Room)

Abstract of the seminar:

Challenging engineering projects such as underwater robotics and mobile apps can be a great way to learn. It can also be a great way to serve the community with real impact. But when one objective is focused on learning and another objective is focused on serving, can the two objectives truly be integrated into the same project? How do you design such a project? How do you teach the students to do it? How do you know it is making an impact? Dr. Tim Woo, UGC Teaching Award recipient in 2015, will be sharing with us his experience in making it happen.

*This talk is organized by Office of Service Learning, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; co-organized by Faculty of Engineering and Educational Development Centre; sponsored by IEEE-HK SIGHT and Community of Practice on Service-Learning
