Appreciative Advising - A Framework to Enhance Student Success

A workshop for Departmental Academic Advisors entitled "Appreciative Advising - A Framework to Enhance Student Success" organized by the Office of General University Requirements(OGUR) was successfully held on 2 Jun 2016.

In this workshop, Dr. Jennifer Bloom, co-founder of the Appreciative Advising and Appreciative Education movements explored this amazing and insightful advising approach with academic advisors from PolyU, EdUHK, HKU and HKUST. The hands-on workshop focused on providing advisors with an overview of Appreciative Advising, based on the book titled, The Appreciative Advising Revolution, which the presenter co-authored with Dr. Bryant Hutson and Dr. Ye He from the University of North Carolina. The definitions of six phases of Appreciative Advising - Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don’t Settle - were explained and participants have learned specific techniques for implementing each of these phases.

Professional Development in the Digital Age

Gavin Dudeney, Director of Technology for The Consultants-E working in online training and consultancy in EdTech in the UK, was invited to give a lunchtime presentation and an afternoon workshop on the topic of "Professional Development in the Digital Age" on 7 June.

In his presentation, Dudeney explained the ways of developing oneself as a professional in the digital age varying from small online courses through to MOOCs and other large-scale development opportunities and from blogs to social media and beyond.

In the afternoon workshop, the facilitator examined with the participants the principles of designing and delivering blended and online courses. Taking as our starting point Salmon's Five Stage Model for e-learning design, the facilitator examined an actual course to extrapolate key structure, content and delivery principles.

This event was co-organized by Community of Practice (CoP) on Developing, Recognising and Rewarding Excellent Teaching and Educational Development Centre.
