Welcome to the e-bulletin of Communities of Practice (CoPs), where you will be able to catch up with our most updated events and information of the five CoPs in PolyU.

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Using Lesson Plans to Make Us Better Educators

In this interactive roundtable session on 22 March, with Dr. Robert Wright as the facilitator, three distinguished panelists, Prof. Jason Choi (ITC), Ms. Sandy Tang (BRE) and Dr. Vincent Ng (COMP), were invited to share their insights on the topic of lesson plans. The facilitators shared their experience in using lesson plan to prepare for classes and deal with difficult situations by using back up plans. The discussion in this roundtable session gave participants powerful inspirations on how to improve their teaching and professional development.

This activity was co-organised by CoP on Developing, Recognising and Rewarding Excellent Teaching, EDC, Pao Yue-kong Library and Centre STARS.

Assessing Students’ Reflection in Service-Learning Subjects

Reflective practice is a core component of students’ participating in service learning, but existing knowledge and understanding regarding this topic is still limited. Dr. Kevin Chan (APSS), Dr. Eddie Ng (APSS) and Dr. Helena Au (VPSGA-GYLI) conducted a workshop on 8 April and provided an overview of this critical topic, and explore the ways to facilitate and assess students’ reflection in service-learning subjects at PolyU.

From a Vision Hong Kong Concept to a Service-learning Impact

Dr. Henry Chan (SO), Dr. Do Chi-wai (SO) and Dr. Lily Chan (SO) shared about teaching a discipline-specific vision screening service for a general undergraduate university audience on 15 April. Topics on subject initiation, design, and teaching outcomes were discussed.

Service-Learning Scholarship Salon

A Research Salon was held on 25 April. The purpose of this Salon was to promote and support research in and a scholarly approach to service-learning. Eight subject teachers who have completed or have on-going research/scholarly work relating to SL in PolyU shared and discussed their good work by giving short presentations and displaying posters at the Interactive Poster Session. Posters were also be on display between 25 April to 6 May on the FJ podium.

Forum on Active Learning with LMS: Now and Beyond

We are now in an era in which education in universities and colleges offers more possibilities and opportunities brought by ever-changing technologies, one of which is the Learning Management System (LMS) that has been increasingly used in learning and teaching. Professional Development in the Digital Age

Presentation
In this talk we look at ways of developing as a professional in the digital age. From small online courses through to MOOCs and other large-scale development opportunities, from blogs to social media and beyond. How do we know what's out there, what's good and what isn't and - most importantly - what will benefit us most at any given point in our careers?

Date: 7 June 2016 (Tue)
Time: 12:30-2:00pm
Venue: TU411

Workshop
In this workshop we examine principles of blended and online course design and delivery. Taking as our starting point Salmon's Five Stage Model for e-learning design, we examine an actual course to extrapolate key structure, content and delivery principles which may be applied to any content in any discipline.

Date: 7 June 2016 (Tue)
Time: 3:00-5:00pm
Venue: TU411
