ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION

Dr Catherine Cheung and two students in the Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management programme, Mr Arai Tsuguto and Ms June Yang, received three of the five Best Paper Awards at the 10th Asia Pacific Forum for Graduate Students' Research in Tourism, held in Singapore on 14-17 July 2011.

  • Mr Tsuguto won the Best Research Paper: Hospitality Management on the topic "Service Quality Assessment of the Hong Kong Tourism Industry: Hotel, Restaurant, Retail Shops and Airlines".
  • Dr Cheung and Ms Yang received the Best Paper: Tourism Management (Research in Progress). The paper was entitled "A Conceptual Model of the Effects of Experiential Learning and Employability Skills on Learning Satisfaction: A Case Study of Generation Y Hotel Students in China".
  • Dr Cheung also received the Best Paper: Hospitality Management (Research in Progress). The topic was "What are the Effects of Perceived Organisational Support, Supervisor Support and Emotional Labour on Tour Guides' Role Performance? A Conceptual Model for Empirical Research".


Dr Kam Hung was honoured with the Outstanding Reviewer of the Year Award for her outstanding contributions at the 2011 Annual International CHRIE Summer Conference and Marketplace in Denver, Colorado, USA, on 27-30 July 2011.

Dr Barry Mak and Professor Bob McKercher recently received approval from the Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) for their project entitled "Enhancing the Role of the Travel Trade in Reducing Tourism's Carbon Footprint". The project is one of seven approved in the eighth round of SDF applications, with a total grant of HK$7.3 million.

In an article entitled "Hospitality Marketing: A Retrospective Analysis (1960-2010) and Predications (2010-2020)", published in the Cornell Hospitality Review (Volume 51, Issue 4, 2010), Professor Kaye Chon was mentioned as one of the two most influential figures of the 1990s, based on a survey of educators and practitioners in the hospitality field.

Professor Haiyan Song contributed to the Changbai Mountain Tourism Administrative Region's Master Plan by carrying out an impact assessment of tourism development in the region. The project was completed in July 2011.

A recent article published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research examining contributions to the leading tourism and hospitality journals during the past ten years ranked Professor Bob McKercher as the top contributor to tourism journals. The study also showed that the SHTM represents the largest concentration of prolific scholars of any university in hospitality and tourism.

Professor Haiyan Song has been invited by the Guangdong Tourism Administration and Sun Yat-sen University to serve as an Advisor during the development of the Guangdong Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), the first TSA in China to be compiled on the basis of the UNWTO TSA Methodological Framework 2008. Project completion is set for the end of 2011.
