The Information Technology Services Office (ITS) provides technical support for colleagues and students to use PolyU's
e-Learning common platform - WebCT (http://webct.polyu.edu.hk). After the merge of the two major e-Learning companies, WebCT and Blackboard, the WebCT platform has been renamed as the Blackboard Learning System though the functionalities remain the same.

Blackboard Learning System is the
e-Learning solution using by millions of students from thousands of universities in the world, including many of the top 50 US universities. In Hong Kong most UGC universities and all institutions under Vocational Training Council are also using Blackboard Learning System. Among local universities, PolyU is most successful in provision of e-Learning services with over 3,500 subject web sites to support all academic departments.

As part of the technical support provided by ITS on e-Learning, subject web sites with comprehensive e-Learning features and student record database will be created for lecturers on WebCT (Blackboard) server. Lecturers can freely incorporate contents into the web sites to supplement their classroom teaching.

Video servers are also available from ITS for video on demand services to support e-Learning. Any digital video in Windows Media format or Real Video format can be hosted on these servers for streaming to Internet or Intranet.

Colleagues could also make use of more than one million articles on thousands of electronic journals subscribed by PolyU Library. Many major publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Longman, Addison Wesley, Prentice Hall, John Wiley & Sons, Thomson Learning and Pearson Education etc. are delivering e-Learning content on the Blackboard Learning System to support the textbooks published by them.
