In early May, President Prof. Timothy W. Tong gave a talk on “Hong Kong: Technology, Science and Higher Education” at a luncheon organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. Prof. Tong talked about the role of technology in a knowledge-based economy, highlighting HKSAR’s and local higher education institutions’ effort in fostering technology development and knowledge transfer. He further discussed the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Sharing PolyU’s education philosophy, Prof. Tong stressed that the University’s four-year undergraduate curriculum places much emphasis on “service learning” in addition to imparting professional knowledge. The objective is to instill students with a sense of social responsibility while strengthening their competitiveness.

Prof. Tong also took this overseas opportunity to meet with some 150 PolyU alumni now residing in New York and Toronto and join the celebrations of the 15th and 10th anniversary of the PolyU (Eastern Canada) Association and PolyU (Eastern USA) Association respectively.
