Shaping tomorrow’s guestrooms in hotel industry

Recently, PolyU’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) and its teaching and research hotel, Hotel ICON, joined hands in organizing a global competition –“Tomorrow’s Guestrooms”. This is a platform for hotel suppliers and providers in design, technology and well-being to play a part in shaping future’s guestrooms through sharing their innovative products and technologies.

Through collaboration with industry partners in this competition, SHTM not only serves as a platform to develop and showcase new designs and technologies and business concepts in hotel management, but also facilitates more in-depth research into the application of creative concepts for the advancement of the entire industry.

At the forefront of innovation, Hotel ICON provides winners of the Competition with the unique opportunity to test and research their products and services in dedicated guestrooms at the hotel for a period of six months. The three “Tomorrow’s Guestrooms” are now open for reservation.

The winning entries are:

Neobar and E-Tray by Bartech is fitted with energy efficient compressors using an eco-friendly refrigerant and equipped with detection capabilities. It can maximize efficiency of minibar operation and optimize guest service.
   
High Definition (HD) Weave Carpet by Brintons Carpets Limited is produced by a patented carpet loom that can weave up to 32 colours, offering hospitality industry unrivalled design definition and colour choices.
   
SuperDock DN 7000 by DNet Solution (HK) Company Limited is produced using electro-magnetic induction technology. It works with all kinds of smart devices with built-in speakers. It also comes with USB charger ports and alarm clock.
   
Guest Communication Center (GCC) TM by Fingi Inc. is more than a bedside device. It is not only a multiple charging station but also an IP speakerphone and can perform as the room Internet access point.
   
AElement by Salto Systems Asia Pte Ltd. is a wireless locking system which provides real-time control over the guestrooms and allows cell phones to act as contactless data carriers to open and control access-controlled doors.
   
TELY by Service Technology Partners Limited allows the call agent to communicate visually with guests by pushing media and information on room service, dining, way finding, etc. in real-time to the television screen.
   
iFlyPad by Spicy Innovations Limited works on all smartphones and tablets, providing a comfortable, ergonomic viewing experience for users. It can be used in many locations from back seats of flights to suitable surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens.
   
Hotel ONAIR by VDA Asia Pacific Limited works through the cloud-based television system. It allows guests to view the hotel offerings and city attractions as well as stream their own music, videos and pictures wirelessly to the television.
