PolyU student comes first in engineering paper contest

A paper titled “Contactless Finger Knuckle Identification using Smartphones” written by Cheng Kam-yuen, student of the Department of Computing, has won the First Prize in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Hong Kong Section 2012 Student Paper Contest.

Supervised by Assistant Professor Dr Ajay Kumar, Kam-yuen has developed a smartphone-based online system to automatically identify a person by his/her finger knuckle images. It is the first such application in the world and can operate on any smartphone which uses Android operating system and contains an embedded camera. It is a user-friendly system to enhance data security in smartphones.
