Computing graduate scoops another award

PolyU computing graduate Mr Lau Hiu-fung recently struck gold again in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2009’s Best Innovation and Research Category (College & Undergraduates) with his final year project, RFID/SMS-based Flight Information and Advertisements System. This is the third honour he received for this invention.

Earlier on, Hiu-fung won a gold award in the 2009 Amway Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Grand Competition, and another gold award in the U-21 category of the Hong Kong RFID Awards 2009 with the same project.

Nicknamed “Hong Kong’s Stephen Hawking”, Hiu-fung has been suffering from the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy disease from a very young age and can move only a bit of his head and fingers these days. With the enthusiasm for learning and unfailing willpower, he completed his award-winning final year project by tapping the keys on the computer keyboard with a pair of chopsticks.

Now working as a project assistant of the University’s Department of Computing, Hiu-fung continues to realize his simple dream — to live every day without regret.
