My undergraduate degree has enhanced my language skills. Reading a major in English Studies for the Professions has shaped my English skills, particularly at work settings. The minor in Translation by the Chinese and Bilingual Studies department has equipped me with a new skill – simultaneous interpreting. To further boost my competitiveness, I also started learning my 4th language – Spanish. I believe it is always better to improve yourself by learning something new.
Overseas opportunities provided within my Department and PolyU has given me remarkable experience. In my first summer holiday, I participated in an overseas placement scheme, in which I was placed to work at a club house in rural Australia. It was an eye-opening experience, as I have never worked abroad before. This was an enjoyable moment in my youth. During that year, I also joined AIESEC, an international youth organisation, where I had the chance to go abroad and meet friends from around the world.
The skills that I have enhanced in PolyU has prepared me for challenges. In my second year’s summer, I was selected from a competitive pool of candidate to work under the Administrative Services Summer Internship at the Hong Kong SAR government. I was placed at the Sham Shui Po District Office where I had the chance to know more about our society and its people. Also, it provided me with valuable insight of working in an office setting.
After my studies in PolyU, I decided to pursue a legal career in the future and hence started my postgraduate studies in law. The skills that I have learnt in my undergraduate degree has helped me in better understand the complicated texts in judgments and legislations.
Looking back 4 years ago when I first stepped into the campus, I have gained a lot and I truly enjoy my time here.
