Russia-China and Russia-Hong Kong Relations

Throughout centuries, relations between Russia and China had their ups and downs, but it was in the 20th century when they consistently played an important role in the development of Asia and the whole world.

 

What is the current state of Russian-Chinese relations and what stands behind the increasingly close cooperation between the two countries?

 

The Russian Consul-General will give a brief overview of the modern ties between Russia and China and share his views on the place of Hong Kong in the future interaction between Russia, China and Asia as a whole.

Speaker’s Biography

Mr. Rashid Alimov has been serving as Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) since 1 January 2016.  

 

Before joining the SCO, Mr. Alimov was a State Advisor of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan from 1991 to 1992. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan during 1992- 1994, and the permanent representative of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations from 1995 to 2005.  He was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan in People's Republic of China, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during 2005-2015.

 

Mr Alexander V. KOZLOV graduated from Moscow State University of International Relations with a degree in international relations in 1988 and joined diplomatic service in the same year. Since then, he has been working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and Russia, Consulate General of the USSR in Shanghai and Embassy of the Russian Federation in China in various positions. In 2011, he was appointed as Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in China, responsible for issues of the Russian-Chinese trade and economic cooperation. In 2015, he assumed his duty as the Consul-General of the Russian Federation to Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR.
