Environmental Factors Affecting Peripheral Defocus in Relation to the Prevalence of Myopia

Peripheral defocus had been addressed as a component triggering the emmetropization. Various studies have shown that the eye will grow to compensate the defocus (Wallman and Winawer, 2004; Mutti et al., 2007), and the interactive effect on the ratio of myopic to hyperopic defocus (Tse and To, 2011). On the other hand, some studies stated that the living environment would affect the amount of refractive errors (Mutti, Zadnik and Adams, 1996; Ip et al., 2007; Flitcroft, 2012). To assess the relationship between the living environment and refractive errors, questionnaires will be used to obtain the information. In addition, depth scanning will be used to quantify the defocus that the test subject is facing when performing near tasks. The hypothesis is that more hyperopic defocus (in terms of spatial integration and dioptric power) the environmental setting (predominantly referring to the home setting) would produce, together with higher exposure time, higher prevalence of, and greater extent of myopia the children would have.
