Message from Interim Head of School

Established in 1979, the School of Optometry (the School) is committed to nurturing professional optometrists, conducting cutting-edge research, and provide professional knowledge transfers.

The School is the sole provider of an Honours Undergraduate Programme in Optometry and Doctor of Health Sciences (Optometry) Programme in Hong Kong. Our undergraduate students, are trained to become qualified practitioners with well-equipped scientific knowledge and clinical expertise, and are favourably received by the industry and institutions across the globe.

Apart from excelling in professional teaching and training, the School is also internationally recognized for its high impact research. We are proud of making significant breakthroughs in controlling myopia progression and developing strategies for the prevention and treatment of age-related ocular diseases over the years. Our faculty members continues to publish in top tier journals, succeed in bidding for competitive research grants such as the General Research Fund and Research Impact Fund from the Research Grants Council, the Health and Medical Research Fund from Food and Health Bureau, as well as receive funding from local and overseas industries. We are more than ready to scale new heights in the areas of innovation and technology development.

The School operates an on-campus teaching clinic and two satellite clinics, where senior optometry students receive their clinical training and work experience and the public receive holistic eye care services. Our on-campus teaching clinic is internationally and locally recognized as one of the most prestigious and experienced optometric clinics in Asia. On the other hand, the School has been actively engaging in community vision-screenings and providing comprehensive eye examination for the general public. Our undergraduate curriculum has adopted a Service-Learning approach in which students can enhance their critical thinking ability and apply knowledge acquired into practice. The total number of beneficiaries under two Service-Learning subjects and the "Vision of Love Mobile Eye Care Project" is over 50,000 since 2014. Vision-screenings not only can greatly help minimize the risk of eye diseases among people in need through providing them with early assessment, but also provide students the opportunities to work with people from different socio-economic levels and gain a wealth of practical clinical experience.

Looking ahead, in line with the Hong Kong SAR Government's proactive endeavours in developing in the Greater Bay Area, numerous opportunities have been opened up for various infrastructure projects. The School will continue its strategic development in mainland China as well as other countries by sharing our expertise and work on ways to move forward in the Optometric field.

I hope that you will join us and open up new paths for the future.

Professor Carly Lam
Interim Head, School of Optometry
