Ocular and Visual Status among Children in Special Schools in China (Hong Kong and Sichuan Province)

Children with single or multiple sensory or mental limitations are defined as children with special needs (Colenbrander, 2003; Morale et al., 2012). Studies have identified these children as having a higher risk of developing refractive error and other ocular conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, and reduced accommodation than normal children (Gogate et al., 2011; Leat, 1996; Salt & Sargent, 2014; Sandfeld Nielsen, Skov, & Jensen, 2007; Vora, Khandekar, Natrajan, & Al-Hadrami, 2010; J. Margaret Woodhouse, 1998). Vision function is very important for these children, because most of the information a child use to learn comes through their eyes.

So early detection of these abnormal conditions has the potential to allow timely intervention and therefore improve the quality of life for these children (Braddick & Atkinson, 2011; Lundy et al., 2011). Therefore, we evaluate the visual function characteristics of young children with special needs in China (Hong Kong and Sichuan Provence) and compare that with values reported in typical peers to see if vision functions of special needs children are affected.
