Habitat Green in East Africa 2020/21 | Service-Learning and Leadership Office

Habitat Green is a one-year leadership programme that focuses on global leadership and cultural sensitivities in the context of cross-disciplinary green engineering, appropriate technology and sustainable living. Students from PolyU will work together with peers from the University of Rwanda (UR) to design and develop green energy solutions for families in remote villages in Rwanda. Students will learn about the concepts of socially responsible leadership and intercultural competencies and demonstrate these competencies in practice. At the same time, they will also be learning about different principles of green engineering, sustainable development and appropriate technology, and practice and demonstrate these concepts in a service project on-site in East Africa. (Note: though this project applies concepts from engineering and construction, students are not required to be from FENG or FCE. These three subjects have enrolled students from all over the university in previous years and many non-FENG or non-FCE students have done well.)

Schedule:

Starting from late October 2020: Leadership workshops, cultural sensitivity training, and experiential learning activities.
Starting from semester 2: Lectures and/or workshops from the SL subjects in parallel with the above activities
June to July: 2-week service trip and a student forum with students and NGOs from Rwanda or other countries in East-Africa
