Biography

I have established a strong track record as a research leader with a passion for investigating the potential of tourism to regenerate remote communities. Through repeated stays of 80+ weeks since 2015 co-located in two remote regions of the Australian outback, I have gained deep personal understandings of the challenges remote communities face, while coming to appreciate the impressive capacities for innovation and optimism remote communities embody. Inspired to work in a co-creative spirit with remote communities, I have become successful in leveraging my academic knowledge of sustainable tourism to conceptualise, advocate, and lead the development of major tourism attractions which have major positive impacts on the economy, society, and natural environment of these remote Australian communities. I proudly regard myself as a community-responsive academic who can traverse the delicate balance between generation of new theory and implementation of practical outcomes designed to regenerate Australia’s remote regions.

My research impact and contributions to the field of tourism is demonstrated by my output of over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles generating more than 5,000 citations (GS), with a h-index of 41, and an i10 index of 89. My research impact is exemplified by engagement on over 20 externally funded projects, a majority as lead CI, which focus on the potential of tourism to regenerate unique and charismatic nature, culture, and heritage in remote destinations, with an emphasis on generating ‘real world’ research impact. I am currently the HDR Convenor in the Department of Tourism, Sport, and Hotel Management and the HDR Director in the Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT) (#4 ranked globally – Shanghai Rankings, 2023), providing research leadership to cultivate a HDR community of practice. Prior to my appointment at Griffith University, I was Dean (Graduate Studies) and Associate Dean (Research) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, responsible for the formation of the Graduate Research School, including development of quality research training programs. I have been appointed a Visiting Professor in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#1 ranked globally – Shanghai Rankings, 2023), and am excited by the opportunities this presents for further international collaboration.
