Launch of 'ilolo' — game for autistic children

[PolyU Design Research] 'ilolo' is a 2D drawing, exploration, and life simulation game with mechanics that change based on how you play. The game is designed for children with autism and aims to help them to better express themselves. It is good for those with self-stimulatory behaviour and for those who wish to interact with virtual beings. After all, people are often horribly complicated to figure out! The game is now available to download at Apple Store. It is the outcome of 'Digital game development principles and design considerations for autism and special education' project completed earlier, funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission, and conducted by our Assistant Professor Dr. Hanna Wirman. Advertising Design student wins recycling bin design competition

Congratulations to Miss Lau Cheuk Yan Sharon, our year-2 student in Advertising Design's winning the Clean Recycling - Two Plastic Containers Recycling Bin Design Competition organised by YMCA. Her winning design and others of the competition will be used for the recycled bins in all YMCA venues and centres. Report on Oriental Daily, 6 May 2018

PolyU Design organises “Origami x Materials” exhibition

Through origami, even materials like paper, textile, blanket can be folded into everyday life housewares and installations, like furniture, chairs and light shades that bring us surprises — as showcased in the latest exhibition on The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) campus. Origami has hundreds of years of history. It is a folding technique changes the characteristics of materials, transforming two-dimensional materials into objects with three-dimensional attributes. Modern origami design is no longer a sculpting process, but a way of designing objects that are neither limited to materials nor folding methods. In the exhibition "Origami x Materials" organised by the Material Resource Centre under PolyU's School of Design between 3 and 18 April 2018, a group of designers and brands, as well as PolyU design alumnus and students, will showcase a variety of origami-inspired houseware designs and installations. Applying origami-inspired structures and folding styles on different materials, they have created many design works for daily life uses that bring us surprises and inspirations. The exhibition aims to enhance audience's understanding of origami, its structural principle, and the many possibilities of different materials as presented in origami form. Designers and inventors can thus be inspired to explore new, trendy and interesting materials in their future creations. The exhibition features two designers: Mr Kade Chan Pak Hei A professional origami artist and product/graphic designer, Mr Chanis also a graduate of PolyU's School of Design. He is the first Chinese receiving the Yoshino Issei Fund from Japan Origami Academic Society, the most prestigious award in the origami community. So far, Mr Chan has created more than 100 origami designs and organised more than 60 public events/exhibitions in collaboration with various brands and organisations. Mr Eric Tong Graduated from The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, Mr Tong is passionate about bespoke furniture and product design. He has worked for renowned architects Zaha Hadid and Future Systems before starting up his studio in Hong Kong. Highlights of Student Works The exhibition also highlights a collection from five groups of PolyU's design students. Their origami works attempt to provide practical solutions to different problems of our daily lives. ‘We go green! We stay green!’ – Digital Print Shop makes green pledge by joining the FSC Trademark Programme

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (PolyU Design) happily announces that its Digital Print Shop has joined the FSC™ Trademark Programme for non-certificate holder with an FSC License Code FSC-N002782 to educate students on responsible use of forest products. Currently available to the users of its laser printing services are FSC-certified paper products complying with the FSC’s high environmental, social, and economic standards. Trial and errors are unavoidable and precious to all design students, and this leads to material consumption and disposal. Observing numerous used materials in the waste bins in the past, Digital Print Shop decided to take further steps to participate in environmental protection, minimize waste generation, enhance eco-awareness of the students, while well balance the purpose of learning and environmental friendliness. Since the beginning of 2017, the Digital Print Shop has gradually upgraded its service to fulfill the requirements of FSC programme and launched the ‘We go green! We stay green!’ campaign. FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council®) is a global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forest management around the world. The FSC certification scheme ensures that forest products are responsibly managed and harvested. FSC™ works to take care of the world’s forests for future generations – making sure we all have ‘Forests For All Forever’. As committing themselves to the ‘We go green! We stay green!’ campaign, students will not only devote themselves to preventing global deforestation by using FSC paper, but can also use newly launched recyclable form board to reduce unnecessary wastage. Facebook Live Chat - Should I study Design in Hong Kong?

We did our first Facebook Live Chat with PolyU International Affair Office ("IAO") tonight. Mr. Stefan Sonntag, our Internationalisation Advisor introduced the four main disciplines under BA(Hon) Scheme in Design, the programme structure and tips on application.   Please be informed that the Material Resource Centre in School of Design will be temporarily closed from 15 March to 21 March 2018. The Centre will resume work on 22 March 2018.

PolyU Design ranked again among QS World Top 25 Art and Design institutions

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (PolyU Design) is ranked again among the world’s top 25 Art and Design institutions by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings®.  "We welcome the new ranking, and particularly feel encouraged by the recognition from employers," says Prof. Cees de Bont, Dean of PolyU Design, citing the score that positioned the School at the 14th place among the top 25 institutions for Employer Reputation.  "It is a reflection of the academic rigor that the School has established throughout its history."  This QS metric is based on over 30,000 international and domestic responses to its QS Employer Survey, and asks employers to identify those institutions from which they source the most competent, innovative, and effective graduates.  Graduates from the School include established names like Raman Hui, director of the blockbuster action comedy Monster Hunt and animation director of Oscar-winning Shrek to James O, co-founder of the first $1 billion Hong Kong startup company Gogovan. The climbing position also echoes the continuous efforts that the School has put into its research initiatives, conducted under three pillars of interests:  Design Social, Design Economies and Design Making.  In 2017, the Asian Ergonomics Design Lab led by Dr Yan Luximon won the Best Innovation Award from ACED Ergonomics Design Awards 2017 in Japan with its SizeChina Faceform - a set of anthropometric design tools developed for head and face related products for the Chinese population.  New research collaborations have secured significant funding to conduct work in the coming years in many other areas, including Dr Hanna Wirman’s project on digital game development and design for autism and special education; Dr Gino Yu’s development of a software toolkit for the creation of intelligent virtual agents for guiding media consumption and browsing; Dr Newman Lau’s research on breast movement that supports bra design for sports; Mr Peter Hasdell’s project on engaging multi-disciplinary design approaches for rural China, and his publication on "Border Ecologies: Hong Kong’s Mainland Frontier", co-written with Mr Joshua Bolchover; as well as Mr Brian Lee's project on 3D printing design approach for sustainable product development.
