Education Corner Creative Workshop 2023

Education Corner is a concurrent event of the Business of Design Week. This series of creative workshops aimed at increasing secondary school students' interest and participation in design and creativity. The teams from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design and Hong Kong Design Institute have teamed up to present the workshops. Workshop A: Enlighten Future Craft - Christmas Tree LanternDIY with Traditional Paper Crafting & 3D Printing

工作坊A：紮出新未來-紮作技藝 X 3D打印聖誕花燈工作坊

Students will design and assemble their own X’mas-lantern using traditional skills and 3D printed joints after a succinct presentation of the HK Intangible Cultural Heritage — lantern paper crafting technique and the latest advancements in 3D printing technology. By the end of the workshop, students will take their X’mas deco art piece home while gaining a deeper understanding of the design challenge: how can we preserve our cultural heritage while embracing the future of craftsmanship in HK?

 

OBJECTIVES:

- Understand the HK Intangible Cultural Heritage — Flower-lantern Paper Crafting Technique and newest 3DP technology 

- Appreciate HK cultural heritage through traditional flower-lantern crafting from an innovative approach

- Explore and reflect on the sustainability and development of HK traditional craftsmanship

 

學生將在這工作坊學習香港非物質文化遺產—花燈紮作技藝以及最新的3D打印技術,來設計並組裝屬於自己的聖誕花燈。學生能帶走聖誕藝術花燈成品, 並會更理解:如何結合傳統手工藝和新科技應用來構思香港工藝的未來?

 

活動目的:

- 認識香港非物質文化遺產—花燈紮作技藝與最新的3D列印技術

- 透過學習與創作來讓學生欣賞香港的文化傳統

- 探索和思考香港傳統工藝的可持續性以及新發展

Workshop B: Modern Neon Sign Workshop

工作坊B：現代霓虹燈工作坊

 

NO. OF STUDENTS PER WORKSHOP: 15 max. (face to face only)

In this workshop, participants will design and create their own neon light sign in a non-traditional method.

During the workshop, you will learn about the difference between traditional and modern neon light craftsmanship, and how to practise LED light and design skills to create an imitated neon light with the support of the laser cut technique. By the end of the workshop, you will take your artwork home and gain a deeper understanding of the challenge of neon light nowadays and the design thinking process.

 

OBJECTIVES:

- Learning the changes and difference between traditional and modern neon light sign 

- Learning the Modern Neon Light craftmanship skillset — Neon light bending technique and the application of laser cut technology 

- Understanding the design thinking process and difficulties through designing your own neon light sign

- Explore and reflect on the design challenge of neon light craftsmanship nowadays

 

在本次工作坊中，參與者將以非傳統的方式設計和製作自己的霓虹燈招牌。

在工作坊期間，您將了解傳統與現代霓虹燈工藝的區別，以及在雷射切割技術的支援下如何運用LED燈和設計技巧製作仿霓虹燈。結束時，您將把自己設計的霓虹燈招牌帶回家，並更深入地了解當今霓虹燈的挑戰和設計思考過程。

 

活動目的:

- 了解傳統霓虹燈與現代霓虹燈的變化與差異

- 學習現代霓虹燈製程技巧－霓虹燈彎曲技術及雷射切割技術的應用

- 透過設計自己的霓虹燈了解設計思考過程和困難

- 根據工作坊中的學習製作自己的仿霓虹燈標誌

- 探索與反思當今霓虹燈工藝的設計挑戰

1. Teachers of all participating secondary schools are recommended to remind their students to use all arts or carving tools and equipment carefully, for example, scissors and cutters, or any other sharp objects before the workshop starts.

Workshop 1: Infinite Spatial Possibilities

工作坊 1：無限空間堆砌

 

Participants can turn spatial concepts into built reality as they take part in a fun and exciting workshop to explore the use of physical spatial model making and digital model making tools to build fun and interesting architectural interior or landscape spaces, with no limitation to their imagination.  

參加者可以透過此活動，嘗試將空間概念轉化為現實。他們可以不受想像力的限制，探索如何使用實體空間模型製作和數碼模型製作工具來構建好玩和有趣的建築室內園境設計，親身體驗空間設計的樂趣。

Workshop 3: AI Generative Art Workshop

工作坊 3：AI藝術創作工作坊

 

Participants get familiar with basic concepts and techniques of data visualization, AI generative art, and generative design. They are encouraged to look at AI not only as a digital tool but also as a form of expression, art, and design. This approach allows them to develop their own language of generative visuals.

參加者可認識數據可視化、AI藝術創作和衍生設計的基本概念和技巧。AI不僅是一種數碼工具，亦可視為一種表達、藝術和設計形式，參加者可以探索如何創作出自己的視覺衍生語言。

Workshop 4: Creative Poster Design with Generative AI

工作坊 4：生成式人工智能：創意海報設計

This workshop aims to discover the innovative world of generative artificial intelligence and its application in designing creative posters. Participants will learn how to leverage cutting-edge AI technologies to generate unique and visually stunning poster designs. They will also gain insights into the creative process, explore different design styles, and unleash their imagination as they experiment with the limitless possibilities offered by generative AI. Whether they are a design enthusiast or simply curious about the intersection of art and technology, this workshop promises to inspire and empower them to design creative posters that stand out from the crowd.

工作坊旨在探索生成式人工智能的創新世界，以及生成式人工智能在創意海報設計中的應用。參加者將學習如何利用尖端的人工智能技術來產生獨特且令人驚嘆的海報設計。 在嘗試生成式人工智能提供的無限可能性時，深入了解創作過程，探索不同的設計風格，並釋放想像。 無論是設計愛好者還是只是對藝術與技術的交叉點感到好奇，工作坊都一定會激發參加者的靈感並讓他們能夠創作出脫穎而出的創意海報。

Workshop 5: DIY Frog Button Accessory Workshop

工作坊 5：花鈕配飾工作坊

 

The workshop demonstrates the making skill of a frog button accessory by adding earring holders, necklaces, or rings onto the folded binding.

介紹花鈕製作技巧，把緄條摺成不同圖形並加上耳環托，頸鏈或戒指DIY成花鈕配飾。

Workshop 6: Catch your Dream

工作坊 6：築夢網

 

This activity will lead participants to use basic jewellery-making skills to create their own dream catcher.  The specialist of professional jewellery workshop in HKDI will guide participants to use the given space to explore creativity and to complete a colourful yet unique piece of accessory.

此活動將帶領參加者運用基本的首飾製作技巧製作一件捕夢飾物。由HKDI專業導師即場教學，運用色彩繽紛的物料，參加者能夠發揮創意，完成一件具豐富色彩又獨一無二的築夢小飾品。
