Topic: System design for adaptive facade
Project Type: Capstone Research Project
Adaptive facades (AF) are building envelopes that can automatically adjust their states in response to short-term weather fluctuations, daily and seasonal variations in weather, and changes in occupants' needs. However, current AF systems often lack personalized control loops, leading to energy inefficiency and discomfort for building occupants.

In the early design stage of AFs, designers face challenges in predicting their performance until an actual prototype is built and tested in real life. Furthermore, constructing a physical AF prototype is time-consuming and expensive. To address these issues, our team introduces FacadeFlex, a simulation software specifically designed for evaluating AF performance.

  1. The system enables the simulation of AF performance through AF unit tests, geometries tests, and simulations.
  2. The system provides architects with comparison reports and suggestions for modifications or optimized solutions
  3. The system offers a user-friendly experience with a visually intuitive interface, making it accessible for both architects and engineers.

This project delivers a practical design system for optimizing energy efficiency and occupant comfort in adaptive facades. It supports architects in making informed decisions during the early design stage. By improving adaptive facade design in Hong Kong's AEC industry, FacadeFlex has the potential to bring about positive change in the future.
