Meet the Fellows
Karrie S. Y. Wong
Computer was my best friend in my childhood, and I know it well. As the only child in my family, I spent most of the time on it when my parents were out for work. My adventurer personality pushes me to explore all the functions that computers can do, and I enjoyed tracing the trend of innovative technologies and gave it a try. Meanwhile, I build the ability to figure out which product is more user-friendly and helps to complete the tasks well.

“Not only do I use it, but I also create it.” is the main reason that I enrolled in Interactive Media (BA). I want to create tools to help anyone in their daily lives, but not just being served by it. I learnt that UX is the new progression of the economic system that comes after goods and services. People are not just focusing on the product itself but more on the feeling and emotion when using it. This concept inspired me, and I started delving into the UX by spotting unusual patterns and coming up with out-of-the-box solutions. I hope my solutions can brighten the lives of those around them in the process.

UX, however, is not yet a mature discipline in the market, and it has not been widely understood in international corporations. Although many local businesses comply with World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) guidelines, only few take it seriously to enhance the product quality. As an international city, Hong Kong needs to catch up with the world, and therefore, it is important to foster Hong Kong into the next economic system truly.

After completing the programme, I aim to educate businesses on the importance of UX. I plan to get into a well-known company and try to make my team aware of it. They should put themselves in the user’s shoes instead of just meeting the requirements or rules. Then, as I move up the ranks, I will start giving design directions and communicating the concept to other departments. Years after years, when all the staff consider user’s desires, a good product will be created. Finally, if I were to become a leader of an organisation, I hope to spread this theory and working model to more enterprises. Although it will be a long journey, I will spare no effort on raising the popularity of UX in Hong Kong.

To get higher accomplishments, I have taken different online courses to enrich my knowledge. Yet, that is not enough to fulfil my passion or reach my goal. Interaction Design (MDes) should be the way for me to delve deeper into this field and to practise the skills. Finally, I could integrate knowledge with actual business needs to formulate a successful working model after iterations of fine-tuning.
