Anthony C. T. Leung
With my 7-year work experience, I have gained practical skills and knowledge of different duties, including commercial design, marketing, exhibition, advertisement and production.
After a few years of work, I challenged myself to be a backpacker and explore the world. During this eye-opening trip, I realised my insufficiency and decided to go back to school and study at Hong Kong Design Institute in 2017. I wanted to learn something different from my previous experience and chose to enter the Creative Media programme. While my previous design practice focused on aesthetics, I was exposed to interactive media through this programme. Since then, I have been enthusiastic about interactive technology and interaction design.

In 2019, I received a sponsorship to study an Interaction Design course in Estonia. It was an inspiring experience that sparked my interest in human-centred design. The course also equipped me with the design thinking of experience design. And during the course, I focused on the topic of the communication problem between different generations. This experience strengthened my ability to be empathetic to different generations and analyse the issue.

After graduating with a distinction from HKDI, I studied Interactive Media (BA) at PolyU. My education at PolyU has changed my vision of design. I was taught that design is a method and tool of problem-solving. Now, I believe that design is not only about usability or look-and-feel but also an improvement of experience and emotional engagement. Beyond usability/aesthetics has become one of my goals of design. Moreover, PolyU’s programme design enables many opportunities for me to apply and integrate my previous skills and experience into projects. These practical experiences further enhanced my design abilities and thinking skills.

In the future, I would like to apply my skills in design and technology to connect people and enhance existing solutions by considering not only the functionalities but also taking care of people’s mental needs. Despite technological development, there are still many social issues nowadays. The existence of the problem is not because society ignores the problem, but the story behind and the causes of the problem have not been valued. By studying the MDes programme, I hope to understand human behaviour and needs better through user research. After graduating from this Master’s programme, I will integrate human-centeredness into technology and design and connect people with different backgrounds together.
