20251010JIANG HaiyanThe Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (PolyU Design) is proud to announce that Dr JIANG Haiyan’s virtual reality research project has been awarded funding under the Young Scientist Fund (Category C) by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for the year 2026.

Dr Jiang, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Research Centre for Art and Culture Technology and the PolyU-NVIDIA Joint Research Centre, is leading the project titled “Research on real-time construction technology of multi-sensory immersive virtual-reality fusion environment for cognitive intervention”. This research aims to develop a personalised, long-term immersive environment that integrates multisensory coordination across multiple cognitive domains. The outcomes will advance the effectiveness of cognitive interventions through virtual reality (VR), promote healthy aging, and lay a strong foundation for future research and translational applications in cognitive health.

PolyU has seen remarkable success in securing NSFC support this year, with 65 research projects led by PolyU scientists receiving funding—representing a 34% year-on-year increase in both the number of projects and total funding awarded. This achievement highlights PolyU’s growing research strength and its commitment to nurturing world-class talent. Through high-quality scientific inquiry, PolyU researchers are making meaningful contributions to China’s vision of becoming a global leader in science and technology.

The Young Scientist Fund (Category C) supports young scientific and technological professionals in independently selecting research topics within the fund’s scope. It encourages them to conduct fundamental research, develop leadership in scientific projects, and pursue innovative ideas. The program is designed to foster creative thinking and cultivate the next generation of talent in basic research.

About Dr Jiang’s Awarded Project:

Virtual reality (VR) technology provides users with highly immersive interactive environments, enabling effective cognitive interventions through multisensory stimulation and thereby slowing cognitive decline in older adults. However, current VR-based cognitive intervention approaches face limitations such as insufficient tactile stimulation, lack of diversity in intervention content, and static intervention scenarios.

To address these challenges, this project will investigate the key scientific issues in the real-time construction of multisensory-coordinated immersive environments for cognitive intervention in VR, aiming to develop a long-term, personalised, multisensory, and multi-domain immersive environment for cognitive training.

Specifically, the project will focus on three aspects:
1.  Cognitive intervention methods based on virtual–real integration
2.  AI-driven generation of cognitive intervention strategies
3.  Real-time construction of dynamic immersive environments

The project is expected to enhance VR-based cognitive intervention and provide methodological foundations for future interdisciplinary research in cognitive health.
