Summary

In this seminar, the concept of Circular Economy will be explored from the context of metropolitan environments, and in particular urban area development. It will touch upon the need for a system thinking perspective as well as a multiscale approach. The main focus is the development over time, and in particular the way how spatial planning and strategies respond to new unpredictable urgencies and opportunities related to territorial metabolisms. Going beyond the mere reuse/recycle of material waste as resources, the aim of the presentation is to make you understand how to apply circularity principles to area development projects at different scales of implementations and, among others, how the use and regeneration of wastescapes can be a strategic approach in this. It will elaborate on a number of examples from the Netherlands.
