BBA Broadens His Horizon

Kenny Wong has visual impairment and inevitably he has to read very slow. He thus has difficulties in following the progress of his fellow classmates since young. But to him, his limitations do not determine where he can go. He just sees them as some obstacles. He does not care how slowly he goes and he never stops.  With hard work and perseverance, he was admitted to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The academic programme offered by the Faculty of Business and the wide variety of extra-curricular activities have greatly broadened his horizon.

Kenny Wong has now graduated from PolyU with a bachelor degree in business administration (BBA), majoring in accountancy and minoring in finance. He chose BBA because this programme covers an extensive range of subjects which could help him grasp a general picture of the business world and develop some business sense. He went for accounting because he believed that with his analytical mindset and his sensitivity to numbers, he would do good in this subject.

Kenny recalled that among the subjects he studied, Introduction to Marketing seems most interesting. The marketing concepts he learned has provided him with knowledge about the habits and psychological states of human beings, which will be useful for him in handling people relations. As for his most favorite subject, Kenny said it should be Business Finance and Corporate Finance because he always likes to understand more about investment and stock market operations.

At PolyU, Kenny has built up both his hard skills and soft skills. For hard skills, he has learned about accounting standards, business laws as well as useful knowledge in other business domains such as management and economics. As for soft skills, his communication skills has been greatly improved through interacting with his fellow students and professors with various cultural backgrounds. He has got very good training in teamwork, leadership skill and career planning too.

In order to gain more experience before graduation, Kenny joined an internship programme and worked for a prestigious insurance company as an internal audit intern in 2019. His main duty was to conduct sample testings to assess the risk of the customers and check whether they had violated the rules prescribed by the Hong Kong Insurance Authority. During the internship, he has the opportunity to apply his auditing knowledge in real life situation and has gained practical experiences in the auditing profession.

Besides, during the four years in the university, he participated in different kinds of co-curricular activities. He particularly enjoyed taking part in the social service group, through which has got some event management experience and how to communicate and establish connections with different generations.  He also participated in a number of business case competitions, which provided him with valuable opportunities to polish his presentation and writing skills, apart from consolidating his technical knowledge.

While Kenny wanted to fully engaged in campus life, his visual impairment inevitably posed some constraints. Therefore, he would like to thank PolyU for providing him a worry-free learning environment and has guided him through a very fruitful journey in the university. For example, SAO had provided him with an iPad to read contents that were too small or too far. The university also makes available a special room with assistive devices for students with visual impairment e.g. magnifier. Kenny could thus study comfortably in this special room and even invited classmates to discuss projects there. The faculty and SAO staff approached him regularly to see if he needed any further support in study and career planning. With all these careful thoughts from PolyU, Kenny has had a wonderful time at PolyU.

Upon graduation, Kenny works in the finance industry. His next goal is to gain more overseas exposure and so he plans to pursue a finance-related master degree in a foreign country in the coming few years.
