The Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), HKSAR Government has set up under the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) the STEM Internship Scheme to encourage STEM students to gain innovation and technology (I&T)-related work experience during their studies and to foster their interest in pursuing a career in I&T after graduation, so as to enlarge the local I&T talent pool.

Notes for Employers

We would like to solicit your support for the Scheme through offering I&T-related internship positions to our well-equipped STEM students.

Notes for Students

Eligibility

As required by ITC, the Scheme is open to local undergraduates who are:

  • enrolling on one of the full-time STEM programmes (please refer to the “List of Eligible STEM Programmes” on this page) funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC);
  • from any year of studies; and
  • legally employable in Hong Kong


Internship Requirements

  • Local or offshore full-time internship positions with duration of at least four consecutive weeks, allowance capped at two months in every academic year.
  • I&T-related internship positions, i.e. actual work which contains I&T elements;
  • The internship should take place in summer vacation.
  • The internship funded by the Scheme, as required by ITC, cannot be a compulsory requirement of the degree programme to which the student is admitted, i.e. students CANNOT use this internship to fulfil their WIE requirements. Students who are undertaking internship period IN EXCESS of that required for WIE requirements, please refer to Appendix 3 in the Scheme Guidelines.
  • Internship positions directly subsidised by the Government DO NOT fall under this Scheme (e.g. internship programmes of the HKSAR Government).


Application Procedures

  1. Students may apply for STEM internship positions through PolyU Job Board or Departments, or source on their own.
  2. Submit the followings to CPS AFTER confirming a STEM internship offer and by the application deadline:

  1. Approval for student applications will be granted by CPS based on student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission. The first batch of applications will receive priority consideration for approval. CPS will consider later batch(es) of applications depending on the funding availability.
  2. Successful applicants are required to attend an online pre-internship training organised by CPS.
  3. Students should submit the following items to CPS within two weeks upon the completion of internship:

Allowance and Reimbursement

  • Allowance for each student intern is HK$10,500 per monthcapped at two months* in every academic year.
  • Only students who have successfully enrolled on the Scheme, completed the entire internship as specified in the employment contract and submitted post-internship documents are eligible to receive the allowance.
  • Attendance of pre-internship training is a mandatory requirement of release of allowance.
  • Students may expect to receive 50% of the allowance around six weeks after the post-internship submission, and the other 50% at least three months afterwards subject to the approval from ITC.
