完成他職業治療的本科學位後，劉博士在香港大學繼續攻讀研究生課程。在他的研究訓練期間，他對動物行為的生物學基礎產生了濃厚的興趣，而後來這亦成為了他的主要研究課題。獲得博士學位後，劉博士擔任博士後研究員的職位繼續在香港大學解剖學系從事行為神經科學的研究工作。
劉博士的研究方向是闡明神經可塑性在生物行為(如性行為、對壓力反應和焦慮、記憶等)中的重要性。劉博士利用動物模型模擬不同的情緒徵狀，包括抑鬱，焦慮，性功能障礙，恐懼等，以探討其病理及藥物治療機制。劉博士的研究表明，雄性大鼠若需要展示正常的情緒及性行為，完整的神經元新生（在成年個體大腦中產生新的神經元）是必需的，而新生的神經元亦可能對提高性欲及精神科藥物有重要的調節作用。這一系列研究結果將有助於確定新的治療目標，有助開拓新的神經/精神疾病治療方法 及為目前的治療方法提供實質的科學依據。
