完成他职业治疗的本科学位后，刘博士在香港大学继续攻读研究生课程。在他的研究训练期间，他对动物行为的生物学基础产生了浓厚的兴趣，而后来这亦成为了他的主要研究课题。获得博士学位后，刘博士担任博士后研究员的职位继续在香港大学解剖学系从事行为神经科学的研究工作。
刘博士的研究方向是阐明神经可塑性在生物行为(如性行为、对压力反应和焦虑、记忆等)中的重要性。刘博士利用动物模型模拟不同的情绪征状，包括抑郁，焦虑，性功能障碍，恐惧等，以探讨其病理及药物治疗机制。刘博士的研究表明，雄性大鼠若需要展示正常的情绪及性行为，完整的神经元新生（在成年个体大脑中产生新的神经元）是必需的，而新生的神经元亦可能对提高性欲及精神科药物有重要的调节作用。这一系列研究结果将有助于确定新的治疗目标，有助开拓新的神经/精神疾病治疗方法 及为目前的治疗方法提供实质的科学依据。
