2017/11/17 RISUD Public Lecture on Engineering Applications of Data Science: Spatial Rainfall Characterization & Environmental Forensics

On 17 November 2017, over 50 local participants attended a public Lecture on “Engineering Applications of Data Science: Spatial Rainfall Characterization & Environment Forensics” delivered by Dr. Chin Man “Bill” Mok. The seminar was jointly organized by three institutions, namely, Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Center (Hong Kong Branch), and ASCE Hong Kong Section. Dr. MOK is Vice President and Principal Engineer of GSI Environmental Inc, Oakland, California, USA. He is currently Fellow of ASCE, EWRI Fellow, and Rudolf Diesel Fellow of the Technical University of Munich. During this seminar, he introduced two interesting applications of data science techniques to advance engineering practice first. One application is high-resolution rainfall characterization, and the other is environmental forensics. In addition, he also presented several machine-learning techniques, such as cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, principal component analysis, positive matrix factorization, independent component analysis, etc.

2017/10/10 RISUD Research Salon Series on Strategic Focus Areas

The Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD) established a new funding scheme, namely the Strategic Focus Area (SFA) Scheme in 2016 to provide funding support for the second stage of development of RISUD. The Scheme aims to support the emergence/growth of a significant number of focus areas of strategic importance which are well aligned with the mission of RISUD. The strategic focus areas (SFAs) are now the main vehicle through which RISUD delivers its research as well as its collaborative and scholarly activities.

In the summer of 2017, 6 scholars visited RISUD with the awarded Fellowship. Their visits were each proposed and hosted by a member of RISUD. Apart from other exchange activities, each Visiting Fellow delivered a research salon organized by RISUD to stimulate collaborative research.

Since the establishment of the SFA scheme, RISUD has received a total of 23 proposals. The selection of proposals for funding consists of two main steps as follows. Principal Investigators (PIs) of the SFA proposals are first invited to give presentations to the Executive Committee (EXCO) of RISUD for short-listing and improvement of proposals. PIs and team members of selected proposals are then invited to make presentations of improved proposals at RISUD Research Salons, at which all PolyU researchers are welcome to participate to contribute thoughts to these research initiatives.

In view of the above, RISUD organized a research salon series for PIs whose proposals were shortlisted by the EXCO of RISUD to share the key ideas of their research proposals with researchers and students from PolyU. One seminar and six Research Salons of this series have already been held since October 2016. Each of these research salons attracted more than 50 participants to gather together for exchanges and discussions. For the proposals presented in September, all salon participants were invited to evaluate the proposal following its presentation. The EXCO members will take the comments of the participants into consideration when they make the final funding decision for a proposal.
