PolyU proposes new development plan at Spring Media Luncheon
At the Spring Media Luncheon, PolyU Council Chairman Dr Lam Tai-fai and President Prof. Jin-Guang Teng outlined the University’s latest developments under the theme “United and Progressive, Innovation for Strength”, alongside other senior management team members, faculty/school deans and other PolyU representatives.
To establish a medical school and teaching hotel on the Northern Metropolis campus
These developments included an earlier proposal to the government to establish a PolyU satellite campus in the Northern Metropolis. The focus of this campus would be on fostering scientific research and innovation to meet the needs of the Greater Bay Area and the Nation more broadly. The University proposed establishing a medical school and large teaching hotel with a convention and exhibition centre on the new campus. These facilities would aim to address the healthcare needs of the Greater Bay Area’s population and boost the region’s tourism, convention and exhibition industries. The Northern Metropolis is projected to have a population of 2.5 million, with an emerging need for medical services.
Prof. Teng said, “PolyU offers expertise across various health technology disciplines, including rehabilitation science, medical laboratory science, radiography, nursing and optometry. We hope to fully leverage our strengths in medical and engineering integration and build on this solid foundation to advance the integrated development of medicine and health sciences.”
A new school to meet the demands for Artificial Intelligence talent and technology
Another significant development is the plan to establish a new school to meet the demands for talent and technology in the Artificial Intelligence era. PolyU planned to establish its tenth school in mid-2024, initially comprising the Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
To celebrate the 30th year of assuming full university status
This year, PolyU marks the 30th Anniversary of its assuming full university status. The University is organising a series of celebratory events under the theme “Powering Innovation: 30 Years and Beyond”. These events, including the PolyU Chinese Culture Festival, are aimed at strengthening a sense of pride and belonging to the Nation among the younger generation, the PolyU community and wider society.
