The Centre for Advances in Reliability and Safety (CAiRS), a joint venture between PolyU and the University of Maryland, USA, celebrated the inauguration of the IEEE Reliability Society, Hong Kong Chapter (IEEE RSHK) on 27 September. The new Chapter is committed to promoting technological advancements related to reliability and safety in Hong Kong, with CAiRS providing full support for its activities.

On the same day, CAiRS and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) signed an agreement to strengthen their strategic partnership focused on third-generation semiconductors and 3D System in Package technologies. This agreement strengthens their strategic partnership and paves the way for the application of these semiconductors in electric vehicles, 5G technology, and smart manufacturing and transport in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.

The inauguration and signing ceremony was attended by over 100 guests from government, industry and academia. Prof. Wing-Tak Wong expressed his delight in the HKSTP-CAiRS collaboration to build Hong Kong’s innovation ecosystem.

The event also featured keynote speeches from experts, including Mr Ivan Cheung, General Manager-Rolling Stock Maintenance, MTR Corporation, discussing the reliability of Hong Kong’s Public Transport System. CAiRS and MTR have been collaborating since June 2023 to promote research exchanges on reliability and safety, aiming to further enhance the overall reliability and safety of the MTR network.

Leveraging MTR’s extensive railway expertise as well as CAiRS’ research strengths in areas like artificial intelligence methodologies, industry-based data clustering, and reliability and safety modeling and algorithms, the two organisations aim to collaborate on developing more advanced AI technologies going forward.
