Professor Guohua Chen is Associate Vice President (Research Support) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Chen obtained his BEng from Dalian University of Technology, MEng and PhD from McGill University, Canada.

Professor Chen joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as a Visiting Scholar in 1994. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 1997 and promoted to Full Professor in 2008. He was a visiting Scientist in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005. He was the Head of Department of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at HKUST during the period 2012-2016. He was appointed as Chair Professor of Energy Conversion and Storage in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2017.

Professor Chen has also served various academic societies and journals. Besides being Chairman of the Chemical Engineering Discipline of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE) from 2009 to 2012, he also serves as President of the Asian-Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering and Vice President of the World Chemical Engineering Council. He has been Editor of Separation and Purification Technology since 2006, Associate Editor of Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering since 2015, as well as a member of the editorial board of a number of other journals, including Journal of Electrochemistry. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Dalian University of Technology, with a Changjiang Scholar (Chair) under the Ministry of Education. He is also an Adjunct Professor at HKUST.

Professor Chen's recent research interests include electrochemical technologies for energy and environmental applications. He has published over 245 journal papers. His Google citation index is over 17,500 and h-index is 66. He has edited three books, and has been granted three US patents and four China patents. On account of his academic achievements, he obtained the Certificate of Excellence from The World Forum of Crystallization, Filtration and Drying in 2007, and a Research Excellence Award from the School of Engineering at HKUST in 2011. He is a Fellow of the HKIE and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
