Abstract:
The watch industry grew rapidly in Hong Kong in the 1950s-70s, becoming a major manufacturer of watches in East and Southeast Asia. This paper examines three key aspects of this industry – technology, labor, and economy in the intersecting contexts of Cold War history and the global history of technology.
Speaker's Biography:
Fa-ti Fan is Professor of History at Binghamton University, State University of New York. He has published widely on science and technology in modern East Asia and the global history of science. He is a past president of the History of Science Society.
