PolyU-Led Study Highlights Vulnerability of University Students to Scams and the Importance of Raising Awareness
Prof. Xu Xin of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University announced the first-phase results of the Survey on University Students’ Awareness of Scams, a study conducted in collaboration with the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC), at a press conference hosted by the Hong Kong Police Force. The study not only revealed the vulnerability of university students when facing scams, but also underscored the importance of anti-fraud education and enhanced privacy protection awareness in cultivating students’ self-protection capabilities.
The survey covered 3,189 students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, and The Education University of Hong Kong. It aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of students’ perceptions and responses to scams, while providing important reference and insights for society’s anti-fraud efforts.
Survey Findings: Over 80% of Students Have Encountered Scams
According to the findings, 82% of the respondents had experienced scams, with 6% suffering financial losses. The average loss per victim was approximately HK$40,000. Notably, mainland Chinese students reported an average financial loss of HK$77,000, with the maximum individual case reaching HK$1.7 million—5.6 times greater than the losses reported by local students. Professor Xu pointed out that mainland students in Hong Kong face a higher risk of scams, particularly in telephone scams, online shopping fraud, and rental scams, where they are more likely to become victims.
Lack of Anti-Fraud Awareness: 20% of Victims Did Not Seek Help
Professor Xu further noted that while most students chose to report to the police or seek help from friends and family after being scammed, around 20% of students chose to remain silent. Their reasons included small monetary losses, inconvenience, or feelings of shame. This phenomenon reflects a lack of sufficient anti-fraud awareness among some students, as well as neglect in safeguarding their legitimate rights.
PolyU to Advance Anti-Fraud Education Initiatives
Professor Xu stated that the team (Prof. Ka Chung Boris NG and Dr. Wen Xie) will continue with the second phase of the Survey on University Students’ Awareness of Scams, conducting a more in-depth analysis of changes in students’ scam awareness over time. In addition, PolyU will collaborate with the Police Force, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and other educational institutions to further promote and deepen anti-fraud education.
Through continuous research and educational initiatives, PolyU seeks to strengthen students’ awareness of scams, enhance their self-protection capabilities, and help build a safer learning and living environment.
The University’s academic research capacity and commitment to social responsibility, as demonstrated in this survey, have attracted wide attention and recognition from various sectors of society. Moving forward, PolyU will remain dedicated to contributing to Hong Kong’s education and social development through scientific research and community engagement.
